Bantry Top of the Form in Kinsale

Club Quadrangular 22nd May 2016, St. Multose Hall, Kinsale

Kinsale hosted the first club quadrangular with a team from Kinsale, Clonakilty and 2 teams from Bantry. The event was an opportunity for new players from Bantry and Clonakilty to play in their first competitive event and a B team from Kinsale without their usual Munster Stars.

The first round of matches saw Kinsale take on the Bantry A Team led by the experienced Jasmine Kelly. There was an excellent start for the Kinsale Team as John upset the form card beating Jasmine 11/9, 9/11 & 11/9. Meanwhile on table two Bantry No.2 Daniel Collins saw off the challenge from Adam 11/9, 11/4 to level the match. Two tight 3 sets followed with the Cronin brothers Paddy and Christopher establishing a 3/1 lead with Paddy beating Billy 9/11, 14/12 & 11/8. Christopher won the first set against William 11/8 but went down 13/15 in the second but hit his stride in the final set winning out 11/2. The advantage coming into the doubles was with the West Cork side and they passed the winning line with Jasmine and Daniel taking the pairing of John & Adam 11/7, 8/11, 11/5. Paddy & Christopher wrapped up the 5/1 victory with a straight sets win 11/5, 11/5.

The Bantry B Team took on the Clonakilty lads on the other tables with the match starting off with a tense 3 setter that PJ from Clonakilty took Donal Riordan 8/11, 17/15, 12/10. The match was tied when Odhran Summers beat James in yet another three setter 11/8, 7/11 & 11/5. This however was the last point for Bantry as Killian took his three setter from Eli Reynolds and Luca took the last point in the singles. The doubles also went to Clonakilty and they won out 5/1.

With both Clonakilty and Bantry winning their first match it looked as though the following game between the teams would decide the quadrangular result. However the Bantry A Team had settled well into the hall and dominated in impressive style sweeping the Clonakilty team aside with a 6/0 victory with only one match going to 3 sets as Christopher beat Luca 9/11, 11/7 & 11/9.

The match on the other table provided the tension with the first points from the two first matches being shared . Kinsale then took the lead when Billy defeated Eli but it drew level again with Donal pulling off a 15/13, 14/12 victory against William. John & Adam swept the first Bantry pair off the table with an 11/6, 11/2, meaning Bantry had to win the last match to force the draw. With all the other matches finished and most of the parents watching Donal & Eli fired up and put in a great performance under pressure taking the match 11/4, 11/9.

The final 3/3 score line meant that Kinsale and Bantry B shared third place with Clonakilty in 2nd and Bantry A in the top spot.

Kinsale proved worthy hosts and a special thanks to South Coast Coach Alan Hurley for providing the venue and helping organise this inaugural match between these future stars. The event was played in good spirit and was an ideal opportunity for these young players to experience a team match play and put all the skills learned in their various clubs into action.
