A Good Start for West Cork Juniors

What a day!
What a day!

West Cork had a good day at the first of the Irish Junior National Rankings. On his way to the U18 Semi final James Kelly beat James Joyce the Irish No.8 in his first round group and went onto finish 2nd in the second round behind eventual winner Zak Wilson. His quarter final match against Irish No.2 Brian Dunleavy caused the biggest shock of the day when he emerged the winner after a 3/1 result. In the semi he lost out to Owen Cathcart 3/1 and finished 4th after losing to Dylan Grace.

Mair Kelly also made the quarter finals after finishing 2nd in her second round behind Irish No.1 Chloe O’Halloran. She took on Marie Williams and put in a battling performance going down 3/1. In the 5 to 8s she disposed of Natasya Barry and then went on to cause another upset beating Irish No.2 Kate Whelan to finish 5th overall.

Niall O’Driscoll made up the trio of West Cork U18s and moved into the plate event after facing Thomas Early and Louis Murphy in the opening round. He scored his first win against Munster compatriot Conor Leahy but with a loss to Robert Kelly he ran out 3rd in his group on count-back.

Erik Olsson started the day with an excellent win against the Irish No.6 Richard Thompson in his first round group and was again the victim of count-back in his second round losing to Julian Kelly. He made the second round of the U15s behind Munster’s Conor O’Callaghan and this time beat Julian Kelly but still fell victim to count-back after losing to both the eventual finalists Alexander Ahl and Conor Nugent.

Jasmine Kelly played for us in the U13 Girls and was unlucky not to go through after losing a very tight match 3/2 and finishing 3rd in the group. She finished third again in the plate group but ended the day as ever smiling.
